The second edition of What to Expect the First Year incorporates the most recent developments in pediatric medicine. Every question and answer has been revisited, and in response to letters from readers, dozens of new Q&A’s have been added. The book is more reader-friendly than ever, and the new material brings more in-depth coverage to issues such as newborn screening, home births and the resulting at-home newborn care, vitamins and vaccines, milk allergies, causes of colic, sleep problems, SIDS, returning to work, sibling matters, weaning, sippy cups, the expanded role of the father, and much more.

This book was excellent in conjunction with the Dr. Sears Baby Book.

It's ok. Does have some good info.

Not really helpful much better resources are available

I really like this book -- it is full of information. I DID NOT agree with the information it had on co-sleeping --and neither does the research.
Added on 25 Aug, 2007

This book is okay as a reference manual, if you have a specific question. Not that reassuring just to read through it.

Like this book MUCH better than "What to Expect when you're expecting". It is easy to read and reference and very thorough.

A great book, lots of information, very useful.

I really liked this book. I referred to it and a few others ALL the time to navigate through what was normal/abnormal raising a baby for the first time.

I think this is a good book to have as a reference, as long as you don't get caught up in the milestones.
Added on 23 Aug, 2007

It's okay for an overview, but it just didn't have the information I was looking for half the time.

My husband loved this book. It made me worry sometimes. It is a little preachy, as a first time mom it worried me if I was doing something different.
Added on 23 Aug, 2007

Okay for some random information here and there but definitely outdated and preachy.

Really enjoyed having this as a reference book. I think people who freak out over milestones will freak out no matter what book they're reading. It says over and over again that these are merely general guidelines and every baby is different. Just like the Dr. will tell you!

Ok book. I still reference back to it from time to time.
Added on 22 Aug, 2007

Has some interesting information but uses some very politically incorrect language when referring to people of different ethnic groups. There are better resources available.
Added on 22 Aug, 2007

It was ok. It had the basics and was a good reference when needed.
Added on 22 Aug, 2007

I hated what to expect when you are expecting, but this is an interesting read and not so much "worst case scenerio". Crap for special needs info.

Can't stand this series. Try Dr. Sears instead.

This whole series is great. I just wish they continued... What to Expect with your teenager would be greatly appreciated right now.

If you just use this book as a reference and not a bible, it's okay. I've seen parents freak out because their child wasn't crawling by the time this book said they should be. Every kid is different, I think this book can add unnecessary anxiety when your child isn't meeting the standard it sets.

Used this more as a reference when I had questions.

terrible. decent developmental advice, but A LOT of subtle "this is how you should parent advice" trying to be disguised as actual medical advice. don't bother.

Not great. I much preferred the American Academy of Pediatrics book: Your Child ages newborn -5.
