The first thing my Dr said to me at my first OB appt was "If you've already bought this book... throw it out" It is so focused on what could go wrong in a pregnancy, it's enough to make any pregnant woman neurotic. Check out "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" or "The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy" instead.

I loved referring to this book at each month/week

I really loved this book during my pregnancy... I'm sure there maybe some other valuable books but this is the one I clung to.

I agree that this book is very onesided, old fashioned, and condescending. It provides only the "medical model" perspective of pregnancy, birth, and mothering. There are many other approaches out there that are more nurturing for both baby and mother; I encourage you to seek them out.

This book was thoughtfully written and invaluable.

Informative book for the first pregnancy, but not likely one you will come back to the second time around. I found the book useful for the practical aspects of pregnancy.

Was mostly all common sense to me, and the occaisonal scary thing you never would have thought of if you didn't read the book.

Excellent book for first time moms and dads!! I marked pages for my husband to read and he was enlightened by lot of info.

This is a must for the first time mom to be. It is full of information that your dr may not tell you because you are just one of many. Your friends or own mother may forget these nuggets if it's been a while since they were pregnant. The hardest part was NOT to read ahead. If you do, it may scare you but you can seek additional info on the web to calm you down or validate your concerns.

This book was just so-so.

I purchased this book for my first pregnancy. It was helpful, but I received a similar book from the hospital at my first appointment.

This book was the very first thing I bought when I found out I was pregnant with my 1st. It sat tops on the sofa table for months while I got "used" to being a mom. A MUST.

It would have been more honest to title it "Things to Worry About When You're Already Freaking Out". This book is like the world's longest guilt trip.

This is a really good and generally informative book. It's especially good for a first-time mother!

Basic information is informative if you haven't read much about pregnancy, but most was overly alarming and made me worry a lot more than necessary. I found books by Dr. Sears to be a lot more helpful.

I loved this book. It helped me so much with both of my pregnancies. I have even given this gift to new moms when I find out they are pregnant.
It has so much useful information and answered a lot of my questions.

I liked this book, it was a good reference.

a highly alarmist book. the "worst case scenario" of pregnancy books. i sold my copy to a book store.

not the greatest...not the worst

I would consider this book a classic general reference guide. Some of it can be a little scary but it has some very good info.

I think that it's a good book for someone who has no knowledge concerning birth. If you've had any anatomy or biology courses in college then I'd pick something else.

This book should be called "what to be afraid of when you're expecting"
Added on 27 Aug, 2007

mediocre

I found this book to be negative and scary for a first time mom. There are a lot of better books out there.
